  • How can I find out if a collection agency is licensed to collect in Michigan?

Posted by admin on February 10th, 2010 and filed under collection agency | 4 Comments »

Michigan does require out of state collection agencies to be bonded and licensed to collect in Michigan but how can I find out if one is? The collection agency is not required to tell me. Is the only way to find out to just wait until Monday and call the State Attorney Generals office?

I would say if they are not telling you whether they are licensed in the state of Michigan tells you all you need to know. I wouldn’t talk any further to them until confirming their status with your state. Simple enough!

The collection agency IS required to tell you. Tell them that if they contact you in any way without providing proof they are properly licensed will result in YOU suing THEM. Mention the actual code section of Michigan law when you do. The VAST majority of collector either don’t KNOW the law, or don’t CARE. The idiot on the phone is paid to get you MAD so you will pay them to go away. Violating the law is no just par for the course, it is nearly all they ever do.

NOTE: If they won’t put it in writing, they are LYING.

Go to google.com and, type in the keywords ‘collections’, ‘bonded’ and, ‘michigan’. All in lower case. If that doesn’t give you many possibilities, try ‘List of bonded and licensed collections agencies in the U.S.’.
